Confidence and self-belief

November 25th, 2011 by Sue MacGillivray

Most people would like to have more confidence in a particular area of their life; personally or professionally, in their relationships, socially, at work, in themselves or with others.

Improving our confidence consists of a two- fold approach:  firstly, to look at ourselves and understand who we really are and secondly, to pay attention and be aware of how we project ourselves to the outside world.

Internally, confidence comes from understanding  our personal values, beliefs, interests, strengths, skills and experiences and having awareness of how these contribute to making us unique. It is important to ensure that we know all about ourselves. Make a list or lists, be proud and feel good about our successes.

Externally, confidence comes from how we act and look. Paying attention to how we present ourselves in terms of positive body language (good eye contact and open warm gestures) and our appearance are both important. Making the best effort we can is vital.

If we look good, we feel good. I’m sure we can all relate to that. When we have made an effort, we feel more confident.

It’s not however about how we look -it’s about how we feel we look.
